Giorgio Armani #300 Rouge d'Armani Lipstick
Giorgio Armani #300 Rouge d’Armani Lipstick

Giorgio Armani #300 Rouge d’Armani Lipstick ($32.00 for 0.14 oz.) is a warm-toned, orange-red with a luminous sheen. It’s a lovely shade, but there are so many similar shades to this from all brands and price points, so whether this one captures your heart is really a matter of how many others have already done so. MAC Tomango is matte. Urban Decay Bang is similar. Maybelline Orange Edge is slightly redder. Maybelline Vibrant Mandarin is also slightly redder. Maybelline Electric Orange is less red. MAC Sail La Vie is similar. MAC Morange is less red, more orange. Buxom Rogue is very similar. See comparison swatches.

The consistency of #300 is lightly creamy, so it doesn’t tug or pull at lips, and the color glides on in a single pass with even, opaque color. There’s a light sheen that makes lips appear smoother and almost fuller. The Rouge d’Armani formula is touted as long-wearing (eight hours) without fading or feathering, hydrating, and comfortable to wear. I found this shade to be nicely hydrating over the six and a half hours it wore (it did not make it to eight for me). The case is exceptional with a magnetic enclosure that closes with a soft click, and the bullet itself is 0.14 oz., which makes it one of the best high-end lipsticks by value per ounce (most lipsticks range between 0.10 and 0.12 oz.). This is the only shade I have to review from the fall set, but there are five other shades available with the collection as well.

NARS 413 BLKR Lipstick Review, Photos, Swatches

NARS 413 BLKR Lipstick
NARS 413 BLKR Lipstick

NARS 413 BLKR Lipstick ($26.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “warm rose brown.” It’s deepened, warm red with subtle brown undertones and a matte finish. It immediately reminded me of NARS Amsterdam, which is slightly warmer, but I think the two are quite similar (to the point where you wouldn’t need both unless you wear it all the time already). MAC Legendary is browner, warmer. MAC Pre-Raphaelite is more metallic. See comparison swatches.

It is only lightly creamy, so it tugged a bit when I applied it, but it was opaque once applied. It had a mostly matte finish that did look just slightly dry on the lips, so I would recommend properly exfoliating prior to application to get the most out of this (and least amount of product catching on any imperfections). 413 BLKR was somewhat drying over the six-and-a-half hour wear time–it left behind a reddish stain that lingered for another two hours.  There was no discernible scent or taste.

Marc Jacobs Seduce Me (128) LoveMarc Lip Gel Review, Photos, Swatches

Marc Jacobs Seduce Me (128) LoveMarc Lip Gel
Marc Jacobs Seduce Me (128) LoveMarc Lip Gel

Marc Jacobs Seduce Me (128) LoveMarc Lip Gel ($30.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a medium-dark berry red with a creamy, luminous finish. Urban Decay Catfight is warmer, redder. Urban Decay Venom is more berry-hued, darker. Tom Ford Violet Fatale is more purple. MAC Rebel is more matte, slightly less red. Guerlain Girly is slightly pinker. MAC Scan-delicious is pinker. See comparison swatches.

The formula is touted as “highly pigmented” with a “sleek, hydrating shine.” It’s also supposed to “gently [plump] with unique 3-D optical volumizers.” It’s very nearly opaque applied to lips, and it’s mostly opaque in a single pass at that, and the finish is certainly high-shine–it has a glossy shine. I didn’t feel any tingle or sign of lip plumping, and I couldn’t visually detect if my lips were really any larger than they were before, but the glossy finish did give the illusion of fuller lips. The consistency is thin, feels water-based so it has some slip and wetness to it, and creamy enough that it glided across lips without pulling or tugging. It was lightweight, lasted five hours when I wore it, and was somewhat hydrating while worn. The lipstick was vanilla-scented but has no discernible taste. This is the only shade I’ve tried, but I hope to try at least a few more to verify performance within the range.

Laura Mercier Merlot Creme Smooth Lip Color Review, Photos, Swatches

Laura Mercier Merlot Creme Smooth Lip Color
Laura Mercier Merlot Creme Smooth Lip Color

Laura Mercier Merlot Creme Smooth Lip Color ($26.00 for 0.14 oz.) is described as a “deep burgundy.” It’s a deep, dark reddish wine with a little plum and burgundy. It has a creamy, luminous finish. Guerlain Madame Batifole is brighter, redder. MAC Heaux is matte, brighter. NARS Afghan Red is less red. MAC What Joy is darker. Guerlain Flirt is pinker. Giorgio Armani #408 is warmer. Chanel L’Impatiente is darker, less red. See comparison swatches.

This vampy shade is featured in the fall collection, though it is permanent. The formula is supposed to deliver “rich color with a semi-lustrous finish that lasts six to eight hours.” It is also supposed to hydrate lips and not feather or settle into lip lines while worn. Merlot was mostly opaque on lips, but there was a very slight translucency that kept it from being fully opaque–but it also gave it a lighter look. The consistency is creamy, emollient, and easy to apply without tugging onto the lips. I didn’t notice the color settling into lip lines, and I did not experience feathering when I wore it (but I don’t usually have issues with feathering). The color lasted well for six hours, and then it started to fade but there was a slight stain that lingered. The formula was moderately hydrating, and it was comfortable to wear.

Chanel Rendez-vous (87) & Secret (85) Rouge Coco Shines Reviews, Photos, Swatches

Chanel Rendez-vous (87) Rouge Coco Shine
Chanel Rendez-vous (87) Rouge Coco Shine

Chanel Rendez-vous (87) Rouge Coco Shine ($34.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as an “intense blue-pink.” It’s a medium, subtle blue-based pink with a luminous sheen. This shade is part of the Colour range, so it is designed to be more pigmented–and it is at nearly opaque coverage–than the original range of Rouge Coco Shines. It wears for four hours, which average, and is lightly hydrating. Urban Decay Fiend is warmer. MAC Please Me is lighter. Chanel Belgravia is darker, cooler-toned. Le Metier de Beaute Fuji is cooler-toned. See comparison swatches.

Chanel Secret (85) Rouge Coco Shine ($34.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “soft shimmering pink.” It’s a warm, peachy beige with a shiny finish. This is part of the sheer range, and as a result, it has semi-sheer color coverage. It doesn’t really alter my natural lip color, but you can see how it does even out my lip color–especially at making my lip freckle look quite faded. Secret lasted two hours on me, and when I wore it a few times back-to-back, it was lightly hydrating. Chanel Melba is lighter. Chanel Gourmandise is similar. See comparison swatches.

YSL Fuchsia Dore (14) Glossy Stain Review, Photos, Swatches

YSL Fuchsia Dore (14) Glossy Stain
YSL Fuchsia Dore (14) Glossy Stain

YSL Fuchsia Dore (14) Glossy Stain ($34.00 for 0.20 fl. oz.) is a reddish pink with subtle, very fine gold shimmer. Chanel Triomphal is slightly redder. MAC Plum Fun is cooler-toned. Bobbi Brown Black Ruby is similar–not as opaque. See comparison swatches.

All of the Glossy Stains I’ve tried have definitely turned redder applied than they do in the tube, and this one was no exception. It turns to more of a reddish berry with gold shimmer–but it looks almost warm-toned when I’ve applied it, compared to how it looks in the tube or just swatched on the skin. Overall, the color is mostly opaque (you can see my lip freckle peeking through). The color gets pinker and less red as the gloss and stain wear and wear; the glossiness lasts four to five hours, while the stain lingers for upwards of eight hours. The consistency is thin and very liquid (feels a lot like water), and it has a strong grape scent. After ten minutes or so, the product thickens and turns into more of a thin, gel consistency that’s lightly tacky. It was neither hydrating nor drying when I wore it.

MAC Indulge Lipsticks Reviews, Photos, Swatches

MAC Indulge Lipsticks
MAC Indulge Lipsticks

MAC’s Indulge Collection (online at MAC now, online elsewhere and in-stores on August 22nd for North America locations) features five lipstick shades in various colors and finishes. The only shade I’ve haven’t worn to test is Just a Bite, as it is very much your standard red lipstick from MAC (which isn’t a bad thing), so I expect it to wear well and long, but will test it in full tomorrow.

By Design Lipstick ($15.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “soft shimmering beige [with a Frost finish].” It’s a warm peach with a frosted, m etallic finish. It had semi-opaque color coverage and lasted three hours on me–it was a little drying, too. MAC Posh Tone, MAC Delectable, and MAC Freckletone are all similar in color but lack the metallic finish. See comparison swatches.

Feed the Senses Lipstick ($15.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “mid-tone mauvey nude [with a Lustre finish].” It’s a soft, neutral pink with a subtle mauve tint. It had semi-opaque color coverage, and it lasted for two and a half hours on me. Urban Decay Native is warmer. MAC Haute Altitude is similar–more opaque, a touch darker. Dior Candide is cooler-toned. Chanel Confidentielle is shimmery. See comparison swatches.

Just a Bite Lipstick ($15.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “mid-tone blue red [with a Satin finish].” It’s a medium-dark, cool-toned red with blue undertones and a natural sheen. It had mostly opaque color coverage, and I expect it would wear between five and six hours with some staining. MAC has released reds like this before. NARS Mascate is more matte. MAC Such Flare is more matte. MAC Runaway Red is slightly lighter. Guerlain Liu is pinker. MAC Absolute Power is also similar. See comparison swatches.

Smash Hit Lipstick ($15.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “sheer golden sparkle [with a Dazzle finish].” It’s a mix of pale gold, copper, and pink micro-glitter and large sparkle. It doesn’t deposit much color, mostly sparkle. It does have a noticeably gritty texture from the glitters. It wears for about two hours or less, but the glitter travels a lot. This shade is a repromote. MAC Ruffian Gold is less sparkly. Guerlain Altoum is more golden. See comparison swatches.

Sweet Succulence Lipstick ($15.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “deep glossy plum [with a Lustre finish].” It’s a purplish berry with cool undertones. It was semi-sheer, and it had a tendency to settle into lip lines and took some blending to apply evenly. It lasted three hours on me. NARS Valparaiso is brighter, more opaque, matte. NARS Afghan Red is more matte. MAC Red Dwarf is slightly pinker. MAC Positively Dashing is lighter. MAC Deliciously Forbidden is much pinker. MAC Plum Bright is purpler. Guerlain Bee is more berry-colored.

MAC Stroke of Midnight/Pink Lip & Cheek Bag Review, Photos, Swatches

MAC Stroke of Midnight/Pink Lip & Cheek Bag
MAC Stroke of Midnight/Pink Lip & Cheek Bag

MAC Stroke of Midnight/Pink Lip & Cheek Bag ($59.50) includes a travel-sized Beauty Powder Blush (0.09 oz. vs. 0.21 oz.), full-sized Lipglass (0.17 fl. oz.), full-sized Lipstick (0.10 oz.), travel-sized #129 brush, and a slim mirror. The set contains $9 worth of blush, $15 worth of gloss, and $15 worth of lipstick for a total of $39 in color products; then there is some value for the #129SE, mirror, and bag–all of which are hard to value. The #129SE brush felt really floppy; the brush head seemed a lot longer than the full-sized #129, and it was also somewhat scratchy. The mirror works as it should, but it’s all mirror, so it’s easy to smudge and get fingerprints on it when removing it from its pouch. The bag is a good size and will fit several products easily.

Formal is described as a “soft pink.” It’s a light-medium pink with neutral-to-cool undertones and a barely-there satin finish. It had decent to good color payoff, and the texture was soft, silky, and finely-milled, but it was a little powdery so it’s best applied in layers. It wore well for seven and a half hours and was lightly faded after eight hours of wear. Too Faced Lollipop (LE) is more shimmery. Too Faced Raindrops on Roses (LE) is also more shimmery. Urban Decay Temper (LE) is similar. MAC Pure Femininity (LE, $21.00) is cooler-toned. theBalm Houndstooth (P, $22.00) is darker. MAC Stay Pretty (P, $23.50) is a touch lighter. MAC Easy Manner (LE, $21.00) is less cool-toned, more shimmery. Illamasqua Naked Rose (P, $26.00) is a little lighter. See comparison swatches.

How Darling! is described as a “warm pink cream [with a Cremesheen finish].” It’s a medium pink with neutral-to-warm undertones and a soft, luminous sheen. It had mostly opaque color coverage, but the texture was a little gummy–thick in a way–and tended to cake up somewhat on the lips as I applied it. It lasted for four hours on me and was neither drying nor hydrating. Chanel Radieuse (217) (LE, $34.00) is more frosted, sheerer. Urban Decay Native (P, $22.00) is warmer. MAC Dreaminess (P, $22.00) is lighter. MAC Vivid Imagination (LE, $15.00) is very similar. MAC Angel (P, $15.00) is similar but slightly frosted. See comparison swatches.

Soft Spoken is described as a “soft pink with red frost.” It’s a clear gloss with iridescent pink and copper shimmer. It has a moderate amount of shimmer and provides no color to the lips. It wore for three hours. MAC Impossibly Sweet (LE, $15.00), MAC Like Venus (P, $20.00), MAC Pleasure Principle (LE, $20.00), and Chanel Petillant (P, $29.50) are all similar. See comparison swatches.

Milani Chilled Brandy Color Statement Lipstick
Milani Chilled Brandy Color Statement Lipstick

Milani Chilled Brandy Color Statement Lipstick ($5.49 for 0.14 oz.) is described as a “pearl red mauve.” It’s a cool-toned, medium-dark burgundy with a frosted, slightly metallic, finish. It had semi-opaque color coverage, and it applied evenly for the most part. It wore well for five and a half hours, though it was just slightly drying. MAC Fixed on Drama (LE, $15.00) is darker, less metallic. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Black Metal Dahlia (P, $18.00) is darker. MAC Heart Hangover (LE, $18.00) is purpler. MAC Musky Amethyst (LE, $15.00) is slightly purpler. Make Up For Ever #13 (P, $19.00) is similar. See comparison swatches.

Hot Pink Rage Color Statement Lipstick ($5.49 for 0.14 oz.) is described as a “bright pink rose.” It’s a vibrant, light-medium pink with cool, blue undertones and a satin finish. It had rich, opaque color coverage, and the consistency was lightly creamy and glided on without tugging on the lip. It wore for almost six hours, and it was neither drying nor hydrating. NARS Yu (P, $25.00) is not quite as blue-based. Maybelline Fuchsia Flash (P, $7.49) is cooler-toned. MAC Silly (LE, $15.00) is lighter. MAC Pink Pigeon (LE, $15.00) is cooler-toned, brighter. MAC Embrace Me (LE, $15.00) is more matte, slightly bluer-based. Chanel Kensington (LE, $34.00) is more muted. Buxom Exhibitionist (P, $21.00) is slightly more blue-based. See comparison swatches.

Tom Ford Vampire Kiss Lipstick
Tom Ford Vampire Kiss Lipstick

Tom Ford Vampire Kiss Lipstick ($49.00 for 0.10 oz.) is a vibrant, medium cherry red with cool, pinky undertones and a subtle ruby shimmer. It had incredibly rich, opaque color coverage in a single stroke, and the color applied evenly and smoothly to the lips without tugging or pulling. When I wore this shade, it lasted for almost seven hours and left behind a noticeable reddish stain. It was moderately hydrating while worn, and even after seven hours of wear, I felt no compulsion to apply lip balm after. Chanel La Precieuse (317) (LE, $32.00) is more matte. MAC Prepare for Pleasure (LE, $15.00) is more muted. MAC Glam (DC, $15.00) is similar. Giorgio Armani Red Fuchsia (503) (P, $32.00) is a bit darker. MAC Ronnie Red (LE, $15.00) is less shimmery. MAC MAC Red (P, $15.00) is more matte. Guerlain Gwen (LE, $49.50) is slightly darker. Guerlain Vega (P, $35.00) is darker. Buxom Scoundrel (P, $21.00) is similar. See comparison swatches.

Shameless Nail Lacquer ($32.00 for 0.34 fl. oz.) is a medium-dark, warm red with a cream finish. It was nearly opaque in a single coat, but I applied two just to be sure for swatches. The consistency wasn’t too thick or too thin, so the polish flowed well across the nail and the color was even and smooth from the get-go. It dried down to a naturally shiny finish, though I think it will look even plusher with a glossy top coat. I typically get a week or so of wear with Tom Ford’s formula–normal for me across most polishes. Dior Merveille (LE, $24.00) is warmer, lighter. Cult Nails Annalicious (LE, $12.00) is shimmery. China Glaze Hey Sailor (LE, $8.00) is not as warm-toned. Zoya Tamsen (P, $8.00) is similar. See comparison swatches.

P.S. — For holiday, Tom Ford released two new lip and nail colors, but I caved and bought the ones I didn’t receive yesterday (oops!) and hope to have those reviewed next week sometime (depending on when my order arrives!).

Dior Minuit Diorific Lipstick Review, Photos, Swatches

Dior Minuit Diorific Lipstick
Dior Minuit Diorific Lipstick

Dior Minuit Diorific Lipstick ($36.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “sparkling cool red.” It’s a lightened, medium red with cool, blue undertones and a pink tinge, along with a soft, metallic shimmer. The shimmer is faint, so it has more of an overall effect of giving it a frosted sheen than over-the-top shimmer. MAC Prepare for Pleasure (LE, $15.00) is redder. MAC Relentlessly Red (P, $15.00) is more matte. NARS Luxembourg (P, $25.00) is slightly redder. MAC Love Goddess (LE, $15.00) is a touch pinker. Dior Marilyn (LE, $36.00) is quite similar–just a little darker/redder. See comparison swatches.

The Diorific formula is lightly creamy, richly pigmented, and comfortable to wear. The texture is creamy enough that it won’t pull or drag on the lips, but it stays put and doesn’t bleed or feather outside the natural lip line. Minuit is long-wearing, topping in at seven hours of wear, plus it leaves behind a residual reddish stain. It’s somewhat hydrating while worn, and it’s a really nice formula overall. It is lightly floral scented but has no discernible taste. I wish it wasn’t so close to last year’s holiday release Marilyn, though!

Marc Jacobs Beauty Marc Jacobs Beauty Neo-Noir (126) Lovemarc Lip Gel Review, Photos, Swatches

Marc Jacobs Beauty Marc Jacobs Beauty Neo-Noir (126) Lovemarc Lip Gel
Marc Jacobs Beauty Marc Jacobs Beauty Neo-Noir (126) Lovemarc Lip Gel

Marc Jacobs Beauty Marc Jacobs Beauty Neo-Noir (126) Lovemarc Lip Gel ($30.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “cherry red.” It’s a vibrant, medium-dark blue-based red with a luminous, slightly glossy, finish. It’s cherry red all day long. Tom Ford Beauty Vampire Kiss (LE, $49.00) is less glossy, has some shimmer. MAC Glam (DC, $15.00) is pinker, more matte. Edward Bess Eternal Passion (P, $32.00) is not quite as bright. MAC Eden Rouge (LE, $16.00) is more matte. MAC Ronnie Red (LE, $15.00) is more matte. MAC MAC Red (P, $15.00)is matte. Buxom Scoundrel (P, $21.00) is slightly bluer-bbased but very similar. See comparison swatches.

This is a great formula for someone who likes their lipsticks more hydrating, somewhat glossy, but still long-wearing, comfortable, and vibrant. The consistency is lightweight, slightly slick, and gel-like but still intensely pigmented with full color coverage in a single pass. It has a lightly sweetened vanilla scent but no discernible taste. What I really like about this formula, especially this shade, is how lush and plump lips look–smoother and fuller–due to that high-shine finish. Neo-Noir wore well for six and a half hours and left a residual pinkish-red stain behind, and during and after wear, it was somewhat hydrating.

Anna Sui x Minnie Mouse Rock Song Makeup Kit Review, Photos, Swatches

Anna Sui x Minnie Mouse Rock Song Makeup Kit
Anna Sui x Minnie Mouse Rock Song Makeup Kit

Anna Sui x Minnie Mouse Rock Song Makeup Kit ($50.00 for 0.24 oz.) includes three eyeshadows (0.10 oz. total) and a full-sized lipstick (0.14 oz.). The eyeshadows are housed within a bow-shaped, red-hued palette with black detailing, with a dual-ended applicator (sponge-tipped and brush)–you might think it’s four, but the silver shade is just repeated. The lipstick is full-sized and comes in a decorated, round tube with the lipstick bullet in the shape of Minnie Mouse (more or less). The lipstick was the best part of the set, and the eyeshadows were just so-so; the colors are, of course, very basic so many will have similar shades in their stash, but the color payoff was more semi-sheer to semi-opaque than richly pigmented. The three-way split pan is also rather small, and an eyeshadow brush (like MAC’s 239) just barely fits within. The tin, though, is nice, and it’s roomy and easily reused for whatever you desire. I was worried that while the aesthetic was appealing that the actual products wouldn’t be quite as impressive, and unfortunately, that was the case.

Pearl White is a pale white with a soft, frosted finish–almost cool-toned but not quite. It had decent color payoff, and the texture was soft but a little powdery. This is a staple shade, so there are a lot of really, really similar shades — see comparison swatches.

Ice Silver is a light-medium silver gray with a soft, frosted finish. It was sheer, and the texture could have been a little silkier–it felt a bit dry or stiff. There are plenty of similar shades to this one, but I will note that it is the softer frost that makes this slightly different as many silvers run frosted/metallic. Sleek MakeUP Pretty in Paris (LE, $9.99) is more metallic. Kat Von D Holy Bible (LE) is lighter. Giorgio Armani Silver Chafer (35) (LE, $33.00) is darker. Too Faced Jailbird (LE) is darker. NARS Ramatuelle #1 (LE, $24.00) is similar. MAC White as Snow (LE, $32.50) is more sparkly. Guerlain Les Aquas #4 (P) is similar. See comparison swatches.

Diamond Blue is a medium blackened blue with medium-dark blue micro-sparkle. The texture of this one was drier, somewhat stiff, and the resulting color payoff showed that–as it was semi-opaque but noticeably more muted/softer than as it appeared in the pan. Applied, it looks mostly black (as this type of finish often loses its shimmer when applied!). Too Faced Starry Night (LE) is darker. Kat Von D Oddfellow (LE) is also darker. Marc Jacobs Beauty The Mod #2 (P) is similar. Sugarpill Stella (P, $12.00) is darker. See comparison swatches.

Minnie Mouse (01) is a brightened, orange-red with warm undertones and a lightly luminous sheen. It reads a lot like a poppy red. The texture of the lipstick was creamy and lightweight, while the formula was comfortable wear, lasted for five and a half hours (plus a stain), and was lightly hydrating. It was mostly opaque, but it had a translucency that gave it a very lightweight look–not like a heavy, opaque cream–though it entirely covered my lip freckle! MAC Night to Remember (LE, $15.00) is similar. NARS Mysterious Red (LE, $25.00) is more matte. Maybelline Infra-red (LE, $7.49) is redder, brighter. MAC Must Be Red (LE, $15.00) is similar. MAC Cockney (P, $15.00) is a touch darker. Guerlain Genna (LE, $49.50) is slightly more orange. See comparison swatches.

Marc Jacobs Beauty Showstopper (134) Lovemarc Lip Gel Review, Photos, Swatches

Marc Jacobs Beauty Showstopper (134) Lovemarc Lip Gel
Marc Jacobs Beauty Showstopper (134) Lovemarc Lip Gel

Marc Jacobs Beauty Showstopper (134) Lovemarc Lip Gel ($30.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “classic red.” It’s a medium-dark, warmer red with brown-ish undertone and a glossy shine. It’s a warmer red that doesn’t go orange, as the warmth is coming from a brown undertone. Givenchy Grenat Initie (307) (P, $36.00) is darker, less brown. NARS Golshan (P, $25.00) is more matte, lighter. NARS Majella (P, $25.00) is similar but more matte. Milani Cherry Crave (P, $5.49) is metallic. MAC Viva Glam I (P, $15.00) is more matte. Buxom Provocateur (P, $21.00) is brighter, less brown. See comparison swatches.

This is a new shade for the holidays, and it’s specially packaged in a shimmering, ruby red case. The case is plastic, but it had a lot of depth–it definitely caught my eye. If it had a little more heft, I could see it looking and feeling quite luxe. Showstopper is incredibly glossy; it seemed glossier than other shades in the range even. The color was richly pigmented and applied with opaque color coverage in a single stroke. The consistency was lightweight, emollient, and gel-like–it glides on like butter, as if the color was just melting onto the lips, but I didn’t experience any feathering or bleeding with this shade. It wore well for five and a half hours and left behind a residual reddish stain. The formula was nicely hydrating while worn.

Tom Ford Rouge Fatal Lip Color & Trophy Wife Nail Lacquer Reviews, Photos, Swatches

$

Tom Ford Rouge Fatal Lip Color
Tom Ford Rouge Fatal Lip Color

Tom Ford Rouge Fatal Lip Color ($49.00 for 0.10 oz.) is vibrant, warm red with orange-brown undertones and a luminous finish. This is very nearly the same as Marc Jacobs Beauty Showstopper (134) (P, $30.00), which I reviewed just yesterday–at the most, Rouge Fatal is slightly redder/not as brown.

Rouge Fatal is richly pigmented and fully opaque on lips in a single stroke. The consistency is light-to-medium-weight, creamy, and comfortable to wear; it doesn’t slip around, but it doesn’t cling either. It lasts and lasts for a long six hours and leaves behind a red stain.  The Tom Ford Lip Color formula is supposed to “deliver pure color with just the right balance of luminosity,” while also being hydrating and applying smoothly. The formula lives up to all of those things–great color payoff, moderately glossy/luminous, and it gives lips a smoother, healthier appearance. It is lightly scented with sweet vanilla but has no discernible taste. It was somewhat hydrating while worn.  The biggest drawback to the Lip Color range is really that most colors are more basic, so they are more easily duped by comparable formulas at a lower price point (case in point: Marc Jacobs’ Showstopper for this shade).

Tom Ford Trophy Wife Nail Lacquer ($32.00 for 0.34 fl. oz.) is pink-toned red with cool, bluish undertones and a cream finish. Chanel Rouge Rubis (P, $27.00) is a touch brighter. Chanel Cinema (P, $27.00) is darker. MAC Touch of Red (LE, $16.00) is slightly redder. MAC Russian Red (LE, $16.00) is similar. MAC Flaming Rose (P, $16.00) is darker. L’Oreal The Queen’s Might (LE) is pinker. Guerlain Champs-Elysees (P, $23.00) is similar. Chanel Suspicious (P, $27.00) is a bit pinker. China Glaze Hey Sailor (LE, $8.00) is similar. Essie Silken Cord (LE, $8.00) is also similar. See comparison swatches.

The quality of the formula was very nice with rich, fully pigmented color in almost one coat (but the swatches are with two). It had a consistency that was balanced between thick and thin, so it didn’t accumulate along the edges or shift while drying. Even the dry down seemed slightly quicker than the average polish, and when it dried, there was a moderate shine left behind. If you want a plush, glossy finish, you’ll still need a top coat. I get about a week of wear out of Tom Ford’s formula with minor tip wear but no chipping, which is normal for me across most polish formulas (so take that with a grain of salt).

MAC Hautecore Lipstick for Black Friday 2013 Review, Photos, Swatches

$
0
0

MAC Hautecore Lipstick
MAC Hautecore Lipstick

MAC Hautecore Lipstick ($15.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “true matte black [with a Matte finish].” It’s a deep, dark black with cool undertones and a mostly matte finish. The consistency was creamier than the usual MAC Matte finish, so it didn’t tug or drag on the lips, though the color didn’t deposit evenly. It does take some finesse and maneuvering to get the color to be as crisp as one might desire.  I haven’t tried too many full-on black lipsticks, and the only one I could think that would compare was Make Up For Ever #50 (P, $19.00), which is less matte. See comparison swatches. A few readers in the comments (here and on social media) have suggested Illamasqua Pristine as a potential less-fussy black lipstick to work with.

It looks drier in the photos than it actually felt from my initial swatch.  The color payoff is semi-opaque–though I really, really tried to get it as opaque as possible, it wasn’t happening.  You would need to apply a dark lip liner (or maybe black eyeliner) to get something cleaner and more opaque.    It lasted for five hours, and it was neither hydrating nor drying.  The big takeaways that it’s a fussy color, will need some patience and help to maximize its color, and it’s not as matte as you’d expect.

I tried layering this with a few other products, and the one thing I did notice is that because it’s not as dry or as matte as some of MAC’s other shades, it has a tendency to move around when it comes in contact with gloss, which can create a somewhat uneven appearance and encourages the black color from the lipstick to settle into lip lines or gather along the edges of the lips.  I would recommend applying a sheerer layer of the lipstick on first, then adding an additional lip color (gloss or lipstick) on top.  If using gloss on top, use very little and see how it goes.  I thought layering a red gloss on top would be cool, and so I picked a more pigmented shade (MAC Russian Red), but the lipstick seemed to just eat up the color yet applying more improved the reddish-tint I was going for, it also made it more uneven.

This shade will be available online only at maccosmetics.com on Black Friday (November 29th), beginning at midnight. Worth noting, it will also be promoted in the Punk Couture collection, which releases December 26th (but I don’t have much more official information than that). Last year, MAC released Grey Friday, which looked more like a purply-taupe on the lips.

P.S. — If black lipstick isn’t your thing, that’s totally fine, but please refrain from making comments about it being only appropriate for Halloween, stereotyping or insulting the people who might wear it, etc. This is a community where people should feel free to enjoy the products they don’t without judgment from others. Thank you for respecting readers who may have tastes that differ from yours.

Dolce & Gabbana Smeraldo & Ametista Classic Cream Lipsticks Reviews, Photos, Swatches

Dolce & Gabbana Smeraldo Classic Cream Lipstick
Dolce & Gabbana Smeraldo Classic Cream Lipstick

Dolce & Gabbana Smeraldo Classic Cream Lipstick ($36.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as an “ice-cold, luminous green.” It’s a cool-toned, emerald green with fine emerald green shimmer. Illamasqua Violate (P, $24.00) is cooler-toned. See comparison swatches.

The color payoff was sheer; no matter how many layers I attempted to apply, whether I used a lip brush or not, it was always sheer, streaky, and all in all, horrible. If Dolce & Gabbana are going to take the time to put out a green-hued lipstick and then charge $36 for it, the least they could do was pack it with pigment, least of all by making it apply smoothly (I would settle for mostly even at this point).  The shimmer and color tended to bunch up, too, so it was streaky, crumbly, and patchy. The only nice thing I can say about this shade was that it was hydrating for the three hours it lasted for–it did stain my lips a sort of green-ish-gray. This is a product that made me see red as soon as I applied it, and I was just in total disbelief as to why they would let this go into production. The formula is rose-scented with a slight floral taste at times.

Dolce & Gabbana Ametista Classic Cream Lipstick ($36.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as an “bright purple.” Less bright purple, more fuchsia-tinted lavender with iridescent purple shimmer. NYX Castle (P, $4.00) is more lavender, less shimmery. NARS Tender Night (LE, $25.00) is similar but sheerer. MAC Pink Popcorn (LE, $15.00) is pinker. See comparison swatches.

Though both of these lipsticks are part of the Classic Cream range, and these specific shades are touted as “bold, rich color inspired by the stones they are named after” and neither of these fit the bill. Ametista is semi-sheer, and as it is closer to the natural lip color, the sheerness doesn’t look as patchy or streaky, but it’s not a lipstick that deposits color very evenly. It wears two and a half hours on me, though it was moisturizing while I wore it.

Marc Jacobs Have We Met? (108) Lovemarc Lip Gel
Marc Jacobs Have We Met? (108) Lovemarc Lip Gel

Marc Jacobs Have We Met? (108) Lovemarc Lip Gel ($30.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “shimmering warm pink.” It’s a medium pink with warm, yellow undertones and fine gold shimmer with a luminous sheen. Chanel Surprenante (129) (P, $34.00) is less glossy. Urban Decay Streak (P, $22.00) is less shimmery, warmer. Urban Decay Fiend (P, $22.00) is less shimmery. Urban Decay Naked (P, $22.00) is lighter, less shimmery. Chanel Liaison (P, $34.00) is lighter, less shimmery. MAC Sunny Seoul (LE, $15.00) is less warm-toned. MAC Flamingo (LE, $15.00) is lighter, less shimmery. See comparison swatches.

The Lovemarc Lip Gel formula is supposed to be “color-saturated, long-wearing, gellified lipstick with a sleek shine finish.” Have We Met? is mostly opaque, but there’s a little translucency as you can see my lip freckle peeking through. I would expect if you had naturally redder lips, you’d also see that come through and darkening and reddening this color. The consistency is very emollient, definitely gel-like, and the color applies easily without tugging or dragging. This shade wears four hours on me, which is average for lipstick in general (on me) but short of what long-wearing formulas usually is (more like six hours). It doesn’t come as a big surprise, given the high amount of slip this shade had. It was very comfortable to wear, and it was nicely hydrating from start to finish. Marc Jacobs’ lipsticks are vanilla-scented but have no taste.

Buxom Serial Kisser Set
Buxom Serial Kisser Set

Buxom Serial Kisser Set ($32.00 for 5 x 0.04 oz.) includes five shades of miniature-sized Full-Bodied Lipsticks. Two of the five shades are part of the permanent range, while three are limited to this set (as far as I know). A full-sized lipstick contains 0.13 oz. of product and retails for $21. The set is pretty much a value of $32 in lipstick, but the benefit is you get five shades instead of one and a half–so for less the price of two individual shades, you get five to play with. I like the idea of variety, as most of us don’t know what it’s like to finish a lipstick (at least not very often!). After trying these, one thing I didn’t love was how skinny the actual lipstick was, as it made application not as easy as when it’s using the full-sized bullet. They’re just really long and skinny, and I was worried they would break, but none of them did after using them, so at least that went okay! The formula is consistent with the permanent range.

Menace is described as a “rich wine.” It’s a rich, brightened berry-red with cool undertones and very fine ruby red shimmer. It had mostly opaque color with a barely-there translucency that kept it looking more lightweight in comparison to other shades in this formula. The finish was still glossy and luminous, though. It wore well for six hours, and it left behind a berry-ish stain. When I wore it, the formula of Menace was somewhat hydrating. Guerlain Gigolo is a bit darker. Guerlain Orgueil is similar. Giorgio Armani #408 is more muted. Burberry Bright Plum is similar. See comparison swatches.

Provocateur is described as a “true red.” It’s a bold, brightened, medium red with very subtle pink undertones and that leans slightly blue. When I swatch it, I see slight blue undertones, but when applied–against my skin tone–it looks slightly warm-toned. It was opaque and wore for six and a half hours. Urban Decay F-Bomb is warmer. Edward Bess Eternal Passion is slightly muted. MAC Ronnie Red is bluer. Guerlain Garconne is darker. Dior Diorling is darker, more matte. Buxom Scoundrel is cooler-toned. Make Up For Ever #43 is more matte. See comparison swatches.

Mistress is a slightly warm-toned, medium pink with a luminous sheen. It had rich, opaque color payoff and wore well for just over four hours. This shade was nicely hydrating and applied evenly and smoothly. MAC Hoop (DC, $15.00) is more matte. MAC Viva Glam Nicki (LE, $15.00) is brighter. See comparison swatches.

Centerfold is a pinky-mauve with neutral-to-cool undertones and a luminous sheen. It applied with mostly opaque color coverage, and the consistency seemed a bit more emollient with more slip compared to the other shades. It lasted four hours on me, which is about average, while being incredibly moisturizing. MAC Plumful (P, $15.00) is darker. Guerlain Rendez-vous (LE, $35.00) is shimmery. Chanel Paradis (P, $34.00) is shimmery. Bobbi Brown Wild Rose (LE, $24.00) is darker. Too Faced Razzle Dazzle Rose (P, $21.00) is slightly lighter. See comparison swatches.

Moonlighter is a fuchsia-shimmered, cool-toned berry with a pearly shimmer. It was semi-opaque, but it had a noticeable translucency, and in that sense, it was similar to Menace. It wore well for five hours, and then it had a stain that lingered for another hour or so. Revlon Plum Velour (P, $7.99) is not quite as shimmery. Urban Decay Venom (P, $22.00) is richer. Tom Ford Beauty Violet Fatale (P, $49.00) is purpler. MAC Rebel (P, $15.00) is less shimmery. NARS Valparaiso (P, $26.00) is more matte. See comparison swatches.

Givenchy Beige Mousseline (101) Le Rouge Lipstick
Givenchy Beige Mousseline (101) Le Rouge Lipstick

Givenchy Beige Mousseline (101) Le Rouge Lipstick ($36.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “light beige.” It’s a light-medium, peachy-beige with soft, warm undertones and a satin finish. It had full, opaque color coverage, and it applied smoothly and evenly. It wore well for four hours and was somewhat hydrating. MAC Antonio’s Girls (LE, $15.00) is slightly pinker. Urban Decay Naked 2 (P, $22.00) is a touch browner. Edward Bess Forbidden Flower (P, $32.00) is warmer. MAC Sweet & Sour (LE, $15.00) is lighter. NARS Biscayne Park (P, $25.00) is browner. MAC Yash (P, $15.00) is more matte, browner. MAC Wholesome (LE, $15.00) is less peach. MAC Cozy Up (LE, $15.00) is similar. Burberry Pink Apricot (301) (P, $30.00) is darker. See comparison swatches.

Beige Plume (102) Le Rouge Lipstick ($36.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “peachy beige.” It’s a light-medium, coral with beige and a natural finish. It had mostly opaque color coverage, but the consistency of this shade had more slip than others, so it didn’t apply as evenly as others. This shade lasted four hours on me and was somewhat hydrating. MAC Antonio’s Girls (LE, $15.00) is less pink. MAC Gotta Dash! (P, $16.00) is warmer. Chanel Peregrina (P, $34.00) is darker, shimmery. MAC Reel Sexy (LE, $15.00) is similar. MAC Coral Bliss (LE, $15.00) is pinker. See comparison swatches.

Brun Createur (103) Le Rouge Lipstick ($36.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “dusty rose.” It’s a medium, warm-toned rose–almost like a rosy, but muted, coral–with a satin finish. This applied beautifully with full color coverage that made lips look smooth and full. It wore well for five and a half hours and was nicely moisturizing.  Too Faced Coral Fire (P, $21.00) is slightly warmer. Urban Decay Liar (P, $22.00) is a touch browner. Urban Decay Protest (P, $22.00) is similar. NARS Dolce Vita (P, $25.00) is more matte. MAC Elegant Accent (P, $22.00) is pinker. See comparison swatches.
