The matte finish tends to be thinner, drier, and firmer in the tube, and they can, occasionally, tug on my lips noticeably during application, but usually have good pigmentation and long wear; they range from non-drying to somewhat drying.

They're a smooth, more velvety-creamy consistency that go on evenly and feel lightweight, but they were quite pigmented and not particularly long-wearing.

I think the lack of longevity stemmed from the fact that the product sat on my lips without adhering particularly well, so they were quick to wear away, especially eating or drinking. They were flattering on for two to three hours, but they tended to look drier and emphasized lip lines/clung to any texture imperfections for the third or fourth hour of wear, but they didn't last much longer than that.

They were very pigmented, too; there's no way I'd have described the formula was buildable. One pull of product delivered near opaque to fully opaque coverage on my lips. To get more buildable coverage, one would have to apply significantly less products--likely just to the center of the lips--and then use a fingertip to diffuse the color outward, which is a technique to sheer out any pigmented lip product.

They were comfortable to wear, and while they looked drier toward the end of wear on, they didn't seem drying in formula. They had a light vanilla scent but no discernible taste.

They had nearly opaque to opaque coverage in one layer and most were buildable.

They had a subtle sheen--more satin-to-cream in finish--that wore down to a natural matte finish within an hour or two of wear. The formula lasted between four and eight hours on me, and while most weren't drying, they aren't "supreme[ly" hydrating either. They are, however, comfortable to wear over a longer period of time and reapply well. There was no discernible scent or taste to the formula.

Over time, I felt like the formula has improved and is actually non-drying (the original launch did not wear well on me) to lightly drying (seen more in shades that have lasted six to eight hours). The pigmentation varies from shade to shade but is usually semi-opaque to opaque with a semi-matte to satin finish. The Rouge Allure Velvet formula is supposed to be a "non-drying matte lipstick" with "intensely rich, long-wearing colour" and has a "velvet matte finish." Over time, I felt like the formula has improved and is actually non-drying (the original launch did not wear well on me) to lightly drying (seen more in shades that have lasted six to eight hours). The pigmentation varies from shade to shade but is usually semi-opaque to opaque with a semi-matte to satin finish. The texture had a velvety, glide-on feel that doesn't feel particularly creamy or wet, yet the lipstick is comfortable to wear over the four to six hours it typically lasts for. Like most Chanel lip products, they have a rosy scent but no discernible taste.

Formula Overview

The formula is supposed to have "ultra-intense colour with longwearing satin shine in one swipe" that lasts up to "12 hours" and is comfortable for up to "8 hours." The majority of shades I tested had more medium to semi-opaque coverage in one layer, which could be built up by applying a second layer.

The consistency felt more emollient and like a liquid lip balm initially, and within 30 seconds, it transformed to something slightly thicker, denser, and tackier, which helped to keep the product in place better. I also felt like over time, the color seemed to look more even and was less likely to sit in my lip lines, but this could take an hour or longer to be visible.

It was felt rather lightweight and had more of that "satin shine" the brand claimed after an hour or two of wear, and it felt significantly less tacky. There are other formulas on the market that have a similar start and finish in feel (going from something thinner to something thicker and tackier), but the tackiness wearing down faster with Chanel's formula ended up reducing longevity significantly.

The color lasted between five and seven hours with deeper, more pigmented and brighter shades lasting longer than lighter ones. They did not survive that well through a meal, and for something that is marketed as lasting up to 12 hours, I'd expect better survivability. They were very comfortable and hydrating to wear, though, and they left my lips in better condition after wearing different shades over a few days. They had a floral scent but didn't yield a noticeable taste for me.

And no, these are nothing like the previously-released Rouge Allure Laque formula. The older formula has more like a literal liquid lipstick, so it was creamier, thicker, and the formula didn't change or set after a minute or so; at most, it wore down to a more satin to semi-matte finish after a few hours of wear (as any glossier lipstick might). While they share the same name, they're really different types of formulas.

Formula Overview

The formula is supposed to "lightweight" with a "creamy" texture and a "softly luminous finish" that feels "deeply hydrating." There was no reference to coverage, but the promotional swatches showed opaque coverage.

The range is broken up into four undertones: Beige (suits neutral, warm, red skin tones), Neutral Beige (suits all skin tones), Neutral Pink (suits all skin tones), and Pink (suits warm and yellow skin tones). The shades also range from very light to deep so that there's one that will "flatter each and every skin tone."

They are pigmented with semi-opaque to opaque coverage in a single layer, and the majority of the shades applied evenly to my lips. They have a denser, more velvety formula that had some creaminess to them without feeling traditionally wet or emollient. The formula has satin-to-cream finish that wears down to a semi-matte finish within two to three hours or can be quickly blotted down if preferred.

I noticed that most shades had a bit of product that sank into my deeper lip lines with it often not being noticeable in person, just in the close-up photos, but lighter shades were more likely to be visible in person as well as in the close-up photos. They wore between four and six hours, were lightly hydrating to non-drying, and wore away evenly. The formula has a fairly strong, sweet vanilla scent but no discernible taste.
