Little Vices

Urban Decay Little Vices Lipstick Kit ($25.00 for 0.15 oz.) contains five travel-sized lipsticks with two exclusive shades (Double Crossed and Mad) and one just-released shade (Love Drunk). The three shades that have been released before were consistent with their full-sized versions. Mad was the weakest in the set, as it was sheer and patchier, and would be most suitable for use as a layering shade as a result. I liked the set overall and think that if the shades appeal, but the Metallized shades still under-performed (consistent with the permanent line).

Value

Full-sized Vice Lipsticks retail for $17.00 for 0.11 oz. or $154.55/oz. The set contained 0.15 oz. worth of lipsticks or $23.18 worth of product–I was actually surprised it wasn’t priced at $20 (Urban Decay is usually pretty reliable for value-packed sets). On the flip side, for less than the cost of two full-sized lipsticks, you would be getting five shades, and as long as you’re not someone who tends to finish lipsticks quickly, the set would still be worth checking out.

Violate

Violate is a soft, medium mauve with warm undertones and a lightly glossy, cream finish. It had very nearly opaque pigmentation with a lightly creamy texture that was comfortable to wear and to apply. There was a bit of color that gathered in my lip lines due to the more emollient texture,, though, but it wasn’t noticeable from a normal viewing distance. The color stayed on well for four hours on me and was moisturizing over time.

Formula Overview

$17.00/0.11 oz. - $154.55 Per Ounce

Urban Decay Vice Lipstick ($17.00 for 0.11 oz.) is available in six finishes, which are primarily distinguished by level of sheen, shimmer content, and coverage. Mega Mattes are the thinnest and have the most “cling” as they are drier and more matte (but most are semi-matte and not a totally flat matte) and can be drying, though they are longer-wearing.

Comfort Mattes are creamier, a little denser, with richer color payoff on average (they are the most pigmented out of the finishes), and have a satin finish that is fairly comfortable to wear, usually lightly hydrating, and longer-wearing.

Creams are usually softer and creamier, though not too soft (they don’t mush or break from the base easily), with some being tackier and stiffer in the tube until they warm up against the lips; they have good color payoff, are hydrating, and are comfortable to wear but have more typical wear (four to six hours–six hours for deeper/richer shades like a red).

Sheers and Sheer Shimmers have a more balm-like consistency that feels a little thinner but is wetter/more emollient than Mega Mattes, so ultimately, they feel quite different applied; they have sheerer coverage, though more semi-sheer to semi-opaque than very sheer, and have the shortest wear time at two to fours with light hydration.

Metallized is the most shimmery of the finishes, though some of the other finishes have shades that are actually as shimmery (to me), but the Metallized formula has a thinner, more emollient base that isn’t as dense or as cream-like as the Creams; they feel more like the Sheers but a bit heavier and more pigmented (but seem to run semi-opaque to opaque, not always fully opaque) with average wear (four to five hours), light hydration.

1993

1993 is a deep, muted brown with warmer undertones and a cream finish. It had rich, opaque pigmentation that applied evenly across the lips. This shade is part of the permanent range, and the mini version seemed consistent in color and texture to the full-sized version. The color wore well for five hours on me and was lightly hydrating.

Mad

Mad is a medium purple with warmer, pink undertones and a sparkly finish. The consistency was thin, emollient, and noticeably gritty from the type and amount of sparkle in it. It did not apply evenly and had a tendency to sink into lip lines. This is the type of finish and opacity that would work better layered over another lip color or used with an opaque lip liner. It was comfortable to wear, as it was lightly hydrating, and it lasted for four hours on me. Also, while technically a new shade, it was very similar to Mad Hatter, but Mad was a bit deeper and had slightly larger sparkle.

Double Crossed

Double Crossed is a blackened plum with subtle, warm undertones and fine, metallic pearl. It had good color coverage in a single layer, but it was not opaque. The color went out without appearing streaky but there were subtle patches of color that were more intense than others and some color that pulled into my lip lines. The texture was lightly emollient and thinner, so I could feel the texture of the shimmer as I applied it, though I would not say it felt rough or was uncomfortable to use by any means. This shade lasted for five hours but had noticeable color that had gathered in my lip lines over time. It was lightly hydrating overall.

Love Drunk

Love Drunk is a deep red with cool, pink undertones and a satin sheen. This is a newly released, permanent shade, which I just reviewed in the last month, so I did not retest it as the mini was consistent with the full-sized version. The shimmer was incredibly fine, so it gave a subtle sheen rather than a more overt shimmery finish. The pigmentation was fantastic–totally opaque in one stroke–and drenched the lips with even, smooth coverage. The texture was smooth, velvety, and easy to apply as it never tugged but still adhered well to the lips. The lipstick was still going strong after six hours of wear and was neither drying nor hydrating on me.
